WARRNAMBOOL is celebrating a breakthrough Western District Golf Association women’s division one scratch title.

Captain Alison Sinclair said its victory over reigning champion Port Fairy at Terang on Monday was its first since 2011.

Sinclair, Deb Rix, Anna Jamieson, Cate Glennon and Tricia Sullivan edged out Port Fairy’s Joanna Flaherty, Diana Robinson, Anne Dwyer, Jane Thompson and Kerry Scales 3 ½ matches to 1 ½.

Jamieson (six up with four to play), Glennon (2/1) and Sullivan (3/2) won their matches and Rix squared her contest with Flaherty, who captained Commonwealth to the Golf Victoria division one title 24 hours earlier.

“They were close matches and, being at Terang, it was a neutral course for both of us and tough conditions,” Sinclair said.

“It was a tough tussle. We are absolutely thrilled.”
